Austin has been home to many free concerts for a long time. From Free Week in the Red River Cultural District in January to outdoor shows at Long Center all summer, here’s every series and festival our team recommends.

Free Week
Free Week is the first free music event of the year, taking place during the first week of January on the Red River Cultural District, about a mile from the Heywood Hotel. The event showcases dozens of local and regional bands across more than 10 venues, including Mohawk, Empire Control Room, and Cheer Up Charlies. If you’re visiting in early January, it’s the most concentrated look at Austin’s local music scene you’ll find anywhere.
SXSW
SXSW runs every March and draws several hundred thousand people into Austin for tech, film, and music programming. Most of the official conference events require a badge, but there’s a full week of free music running alongside it that’s worth planning around. The community concerts at Lady Bird Lake are a standout, with the Austin skyline behind the stage and no ticket required. In 2027, SXSW runs March 15–21.
SoCo Stomp
SoCo Stomp is a free five-day, 50-band festival in the heart of South Austin at C-Boy’s Heart & Soul. Both an indoor and outdoor stage run simultaneously, with a full bar and food from El Patio and Halal Y’all ATX. The festival typically takes place in mid-March.
Rock the Park
Curated by local radio station KUTX, Rock the Park is a spring concert series at the Mueller Lake Park amphitheater. Picnic style, so bring a blanket and snacks. The series typically runs from late March through May, with multiple performances each evening.

Pecan Street Festival
The Pecan Street Festival takes place at Hill Country Galleria twice a year, once in May and again in September. Three stages of local music cover everything from indie rock to hip hop to funk, alongside arts and crafts vendors from across the region. Free and open to the public.
The Long Center Drop-In Series
The Drop-In free concert series at The Long Center.
The Drop-In is a free outdoor concert series hosted by the Long Center in partnership with 93.3 KGSR, running every Thursday evening from late May through August. Spread out a blanket on the lawn, grab a drink, and settle in. The stage is 3D-printed, which is the kind of detail Austin just does quietly.
Blues on the Green
Blues on the Green is one of Austin’s longest-running free concert series, hosted in Zilker Park every June and sponsored by H-E-B. Rock, pop, and blues from Austin favorites, family and dog-friendly, and the kind of summer evening that doesn’t need a lot of planning to turn into one of the better nights of your trip.
Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park
Presented by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, these concerts take place at the Hartman Concert Lawn at Long Center on Sunday evenings throughout May and June. The repertoire covers jazz, light classical, pops, and film scores, and the lawn at Long Center is one of the nicer spots in the city for a Sunday evening. Free, pet-friendly, and open to all ages.
Hot Summer Nights
Hot Summer Nights lights up the Red River Cultural District every July with free live music across Mohawk, Cheer Up Charlies, Empire Control Room & Garage, and more. The lineup leans indie rock but covers a lot of ground, and the venues are close enough together that you can catch multiple acts in one evening.
Music Under the Star
Music Under the Star is a free outdoor concert series hosted by the Bullock Museum, about two miles from the Heywood Hotel. Shows take place at the Capitol Mall Amphitheater on Friday evenings throughout June, featuring Texas musicians and running from 7 to 9 p.m. An easy addition to an evening that starts at the museum and ends somewhere in East Austin.
