East Austin knows how to do nightlife. Whether you’re in town for a couples’ trip, planning a bachelor or bachelorette weekend, or just looking for an easy place to grab a drink, the Eastside has a spot for every kind of night.
This ultimate guide to East Austin nightlife from the concierge team at the Heywood Hotel covers everything from honky-tonks and divey patios to cozy wine bars and creative cocktail lounges. Our guide is organized by the vibe of your visit, whether you’re here for a special occasion, planning a full night out, or just looking for one perfect stop. Many of these spots are clustered around East 6th Street and the surrounding area, making it easy to bar-hop in East Austin, while others are worth a quick ride for a change of pace.
Bachelorette Parties
We may be biased, but East Austin is one of the best places for bachelor and bachelorette parties. If your crew is ready for a lively, bar-hopping kind of night, start along East 6th Street and plan to move between a few spots. Most are within walking distance from each other (and just a few streets away from the Heywood Hotel) and get busier as the night goes on.
Start your night at Mother’s Ruin. It’s casual enough to ease into the night, but lively enough that it never feels slow. In addition to its fun signature cocktails, the bar offers a food menu that includes the Mother’s Smashburger, Old Bay waffle fries, and Thai basil brussels sprouts.
Alternative starting point: For something a little more whimsical, Kitty Cohen’s is a crowd-pleaser with its Palm Springs-inspired patio and tiny pool where guests lounge with drinks in hand. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday, making it an easy early stop before the night ramps up.

Once you’re on East 6th, it’s easy to hop between a handful of nearby spots without needing a ride. Latchkey keeps the party energy going with its playful retro arcade vibe, while The Lucky Duck offers a large patio space and craft cocktails.
For a true Texas experience, head down to The White Horse, a beloved honky-tonk where you can learn how to two-step before catching live country music. If you’re staying at the Heywood Hotel, head back over to East Cesar Chavez and close out your night at High Noon. This fun bar delivers a funky dance-floor atmosphere and a photobooth that’s perfect for late-night group pictures.
Local Hangs
Some of the best nights in East Austin aren’t planned at all. These local spots are the best bars to go for a casual, quintessentially Austin hang.

Zilker Brewing Company and Lazarus Brewing Co., both located on East Sixth Street, are easy go-tos when you want something casual. Zilker is one of Heywood’s favorite local breweries — we even keep them stocked at the hotel for our guests! It’s also home to Spicy Boys Fried Chicken, a local favorite food truck specializing in fried chicken and sandwiches with a focus on Asian flavors. Meanwhile, Lazarus is a laidback spot that offers coffee and breakfast tacos by day, and beers by night.
Nearby on East Fifth Street is Yellow Jacket Social Club. This is one of those unassuming places that surprises you with great food, daily specials like $5 margaritas on Mondays, and a rotating lineup of events that can range from live music to vintage markets.
Local tip: Check Yellow Jacket’s Instagram before you go as you never really know what you may walk into. Heywood Hotel concierge Barb once caught a live wrestling show!
And then there’s The Grackle, which is about as close to a perfect neighborhood bar as it gets. A covered patio, jukebox, darts, and pool table all make this one of our concierge team’s favorite local spots.
Romantic Date Night Drinks
If the evening calls for something a little more low-key or elevated, East Austin has plenty of spots that feel intimate enough for date night without trying too hard.

Stylish spots like Parley on East Cesar Chavez and Daydreamer on East Sixth Street offer beautifully crafted drinks in relaxed, design-forward spaces that feel effortlessly cool, making them perfect for a quieter date night. Parley is located across the street from the Heywood Hotel and right next door to one of our concierge team’s favorite East Austin restaurants, Oseyo. Start your date night with dinner at the modern Korean kitchen, then enjoy elevated cocktails in Parley’s dark and moody setting.
For a slightly more atmospheric vibe, Whisler’s remains a favorite for its inventive cocktails, lively patio, and upstairs mezcalería that adds a touch of adventure to the night. And if you’re looking for a memorable little date-night moment, LOVEBIRDS is just down the street from Heywood Hotel. It has great drinks and an irresistibly cute photobooth that makes for the perfect couples’ souvenir.
Patio Bars
On a nice night, it’s hard to beat an East Austin patio.
Chalmers, just steps from Heywood Hotel, is a go-to for game days and laidback hangs, with two spacious patio areas and easy access to the MICHELIN-rated Discada food truck and Rollin Smoke BBQ. Similar to Chalmers is Dainty Dillo, which offers a “backyard hangout” type of vibe with its camping chair set up. It also has a stage for live music and a total of 13 TVs, making it great for catching a game.

Central Machine Works is a favorite when you’re with a group, especially earlier in the evening before the weekend crowds roll in. The drinks, pizza, and big open space make it feel lively and worth the crowd. They also host events and live music, so it’s always a good idea to check ahead to see what’s going on during your visit.
Over at Cosmic Saltillo you’ll find an expansive, industrial-style outdoor space that’s part cocktail bar, part coffee shop, and entirely Austin. And while Cosmic can lean more casual during the day, its patio definitely picks up in the evenings when you want something easy but still social.
Live Music
It wouldn’t be Austin without live music, and the Eastside is one of the city’s best places to catch a show.

The White Horse offers nightly bands and two-step lessons that turn even beginners into dance-floor regulars. For something a little grittier, Hotel Vegas and The Volstead Lounge share a connected patio and host a steady stream of local punk, indie, and rock bands.
Meanwhile, Parish brings a more traditional music-venue feel, with touring artists and a calendar packed with shows across genres.
There’s also Scoot Inn, which is just around the corner from Heywood Hotel. Established in 1871, the historic Scoot is a live music venue and bar that sees performances from a range of musicians year round. The spacious venue includes an outdoor performance area, two bars, an indoor lounge, and hot dogs from Mission Dog.
Wine Bars
If you’re in the mood for something more intimate, East Austin has a great little wine scene. APT 115 is part restaurant, part wine bar, and part wine shop. The MICHELIN-recommended spot is cozy and curated, offering a New American tasting menu and a la carte dinner menu that pair perfectly with one of over 400 labels offered in the shop.

Cape Bottle Room focuses on South African wines, which makes for a fun change of pace if you’re looking to try something new. LoLo keeps things stylish with a strong natural wine list, and Vintage Bookstore and Wine Bar is exactly what it sounds like, in the best way. Books, wine, and a very easy place to spend an hour (or three).
Speakeasies
For something a little more mysterious, East Austin has a few hidden speakeasies worth seeking out.
Behind unassuming entrances you’ll find spots like Milonga Room, located beneath Buenos Aires Cafe and known for its refined cocktails and intimate atmosphere. The Treasury is a playful speakeasy underneath Shangri-La. While Shangri-La is equal parts dive bar and beer garden, The Treasury’s bank vault theme is a welcome surprise with its art deco decor, vintage bank doors, and sophisticated cocktails.

Tucked behind the historic Victory East on East 11th Street, Busy Signal offers a stylish atmosphere that combines modern sophistication with historic charm. As an homage to its iconic venue (which saw performances from Ike and Tina Turner, Billie Holiday, and BB King), Busy Signal also offers nightly entertainment, from DJ sets to live music to comedy shows.
Non-Bar Nightlife
Not every night out revolves around cocktails. If you’re looking for alcohol-optional nightlife activities, East Austin offers plenty of creative alternatives.
Just down the street from Heywood Hotel, Tiny Minotaur Tavern is a fantasy-themed gathering space hosting everything from Dungeons & Dragons sessions to costumed karaoke, witchy social nights, crafting workshops, and queer-centered events. There’s often a small cover for non-members (typically $5–$15), depending on the evening’s activities.
Comedy lovers can catch stand-up at East Austin Comedy Club, an intimate 82-seat venue. The club is BYOB, but there’s also sparkling water and light bites from the on-site food truck available. If you’re interested in improv and sketch shows, then head to Coldtowne Theater, located about one block from Heywood Hotel. For something even more unique, consider catching an experimental performance at The Vortex. Film buffs might enjoy screenings and discussions hosted by Hyperreal Film Club, while playful nights out might involve mini golf and cocktails at Holey Moley.

If you’re staying at Heywood Hotel, many of these East Austin favorites are just a short walk or quick ride away. Whether you’re in the mood for dancing, wine, live music, or something entirely unexpected, East Austin offers a nightlife scene as eclectic and creative as the city itself.
