From iconic neighborhood institutions to creative newcomers, Austin’s bakery scene is as flavorful as the city itself. Whether you’re searching for a perfectly frosted cupcake, traditional bread, a flaky croissant, or even a vegan treat, these local Austin bakeries deliver something for every kind of sweet tooth.
Below, the Heywood Hotel concierge team put together our recommendations for some of Austin’s best places to grab a pastry or two.
East Austin Bakeries
We’re lucky to have some of the best Austin bakeries close to our hotel. Here are our favorite East Austin bakeries and cafes.
Rockman
Conveniently down the street from the Heywood, Rockman is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The bakery offers a menu of classic pastries, bagels and schmears, coffee, and even cocktails. If you’re feeling adventurous, try something from the weekend specials menu which offers creative twists on the classics, including a pecan sticky miso bun, chocolate chip cookie croissant, and cardamom pistachio orange babka.
Mercado Sin Nombre

Mercado Sin Nombre is a cafe located a little over a mile from the Heywood. In addition to specialty Mexican coffee, the menu focuses on showcasing Mexican heirloom corn through signature menu items including masa twinkies, masa pancakes, and the Bad Honey Bunny, a yellow masa milk bread with honey butter masa glaze. Mercado Sin Nombre was also recently awarded a Bib Gourmand in the 2025 Texas Michelin Guide!
Comadre Panadería
Comadre Panadería is a woman-owned bakery founded by award-winning baker Mariela Camacho. The Mexican-American bakery is known for classics such as conchas and empanadas, as well as sweet treats like Mexican wedding cookies and its signature pink cake which is a corn flour sheet cake topped with prickly pear buttercream. The menu changes weekly (sometimes daily), so be sure to check out their website to see the latest updates or stop by in person to see what’s available. Not sure what to order? Chef Mariela shares her perfect order here.
OMG Squee
OMG Squee is Austin’s first and only gluten-free, Asian-American dessert shop. Here you’ll find Asian-inspired pastries and desserts, including butter mochi donuts and taiyaki soft serve.
You may also recognize the bakery from season six of ‘Queer Eye’ on Netflix which showcased owner Sarah Lim!
Rocheli Patisserie
Rocheli Patisserie is an award-winning French bakery that offers a variety of French desserts including macarons and croissants, as well as elegantly decorated cakes. The cafe also serves gourmet tea and a variety of specialty lattes with rotating seasonal flavors.
Sour Duck Market

Sour Duck Market is a combination bakery, cafe, bar, and beer garden — every local’s favorite things. Both the in-house bakery offerings and the fast-casual dishes feature locally sourced ingredients from nationally recognized chef-owner, Bryce Gilmore. Enjoy fresh baked bread and traditional pastries, including kouign-amann, cookies, vegan coffee cake, and a variety of croissants, all from the shaded outdoor patio area.
Gati
Gati may be known for its vegan ice cream, but it also offers gluten-free baked goods. The bakery menu includes cinnamon rolls, sour cream coffee cake, and seasonal items such as a bundt cake and oatmeal bar. One of our neighborhood favorites, Gati is just a seven-minute walk from the hotel.
Bakeries Around Austin
If you’re exploring other areas of town, here are our picks for must-try bakeries in Austin beyond the East side.
Upper Crust Bakery
Located in Central Austin on Burnet Road, Upper Crust Bakery is a tried and true Austin staple. The locally-owned bakery has been part of the Austin community for 40 years and offers a cozy atmosphere for coffee, pastries (baked fresh daily), and even a lunch menu that includes soups and sandwiches. If you’re popping in for a sweet treat, we recommend grabbing a slice of their signature Italian Cream cake or one of their deep-dish pies, like Dutch Apple or Coconut Cream.
Teal House Coffee & Bakery

Teal House Coffee & Bakery is best known for its cinnamon rolls, which have earned a loyal following for their soft, buttery texture and generous frosting. Located on South Congress Avenue, the bakery offers a mix of classic and seasonal pastries, cookies, and breakfast items made from scratch daily.
Quack’s Bakery
Quack’s Bakery is an Austin institution with several locations around town. The original, Quack’s 43rd Street Bakery, is located in Hyde Park, a 15-minute drive from the Heywood. Quack’s offers a wide selection of pastries, cookies, cakes, pies, and savory items, all made in-house. Lady Quack’s Bakery is located in the Mueller neighborhood (a bit closer to the hotel) and specializes in custom cakes and cupcakes.
Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop

Founded in 2008, Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop is a local favorite that has become a go-to for celebratory occasions. The shop specializes in cupcakes, custom cakes, and seasonal desserts that showcase creative designs and artistic flair. The menu features both classic and inventive flavors, with rotating seasonal specials that are themed for the occasion, whether that’s a holiday, a wedding, or a birthday.
Swedish Hill
Swedish Hill is a combination bakery, cafe, and deli that’s part of MML Hospitality — the group behind many local restaurants including Clark’s Oyster Bar, Lou’s, Neighborhood Sushi, and several more. With locations off South First Street and West Sixth Street, as well as Westlake, Swedish Hill offers artisan breads, pastries, sandwiches, and coffee in a bright, contemporary setting.
Thoroughbread Bakery
Located in South Austin’s Zilker neighborhood, Thoroughbread Bakery is another local bakery to add to your list. The shop offers breads, pastries, and “Burridoughs,” which is a cross between a breakfast taco and a kolache. However, their signature offering is their cookies. Crispy on the outside with a gooey filling in the middle — featuring flavors like banana nutella and peanut butter and jelly — the cookies weigh in at over 1/3 pound each.
Zucchini Kill Bakery
Located in the North Loop neighborhood, Zucchini Kill Bakery is a vegan, gluten-free, and soy-free bakery that offers a range of plant-based pastries, cupcakes, and bars. Looking for more vegan recommendations? Check out our guide to the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Austin.
