|
Austin’s independent bookstores are more than just places to browse for the latest bestsellers. These shops also act as cozy reading spots, community hubs, and gateways to stories that highlight indie authors and lesser-known topics.
Whether you’re looking to expand your literary knowledge, browse a curated selection, or simply find a comfy spot to read a new release over coffee or wine, these shops deliver. Below are the Heywood Hotel’s favorite indie bookstores in Austin.
BookPeople
The largest independent bookstore in Texas, BookPeople has been an Austin literary landmark since 1970. The multi-level store offers a wide selection of books from every genre, as well as souvenirs and giftable items. Readers can easily spend a couple of hours browsing through the many shelves and floors. Plus, there’s also a cafe, CoffeePeople, which is perfect for reading or working.
Vintage Bookstore & Wine Bar

Housed in a remodeled Victorian home on East 11th Street just one mile from the Heywood Hotel, Vintage Bookstore & Wine Bar is the perfect blend of cozy charm and community spirit. The woman-owned store is designed to be a place where people linger, read, and connect, not just browse. With book clubs, author readings, poetry nights, trivia, and more, it’s a true third space. Upstairs, you’ll find an attic full of used books for sale, while downstairs you can pair your favorite read with a glass of wine, a signature touch from the staff’s curated pairings.
The Little Gay Shop
The Little Gay Shop is a queer marketplace and bookshop located on East 12th Street, about a mile and a half from the Heywood Hotel. The store offers a curated collection of books, art, and gifts by LGBTQIA+ creators and authors — available to shop in store or online.
First Light Book Shop
Located in a converted post office in the historic Hyde Park neighborhood, First Light Books is a combination bookstore, café, wine bar, and community space. The bright and modern neighborhood shop hosts community events including book clubs, children’s story times, chess nights, trivia, and neighborhood block parties. It’s located next door to Allday Pizza, a pizza shop serving New York-style slices, and Tiny Grocer, a specialty grocer.
BookWoman
A cornerstone of Austin’s literary scene, BookWoman has been Austin’s only feminist bookstore since 1975 — and it’s the only shop of its kind in Texas. The inclusive bookstore offers a wide selection of books by LGBTQ+ and women authors, making it a great place to expand your literary perspective. The shop is located on North Lamar Boulevard, about a 15-minute drive from the Heywood Hotel.
Reverie Books

Tucked away in South Austin’s Westgate neighborhood, Reverie Books is a woman- and LGBTQ-owned indie bookstore dedicated to inclusivity and community. Named “Best Tiny Bookshop” in the Austin Chronicle’s 2022 Best of Austin Awards, Reverie offers both new and used books with a strong focus on social justice, race, reproductive rights, YA, and poetry.
Birdhouse Books
Opened in 2024, Birdhouse Books is the newest to Austin’s book shop scene. The queer- woman- veteran-owned independent book and gifts store is an inclusive space that hosts author events, book clubs, and even children’s story time. Birdhouse Books is located on Burnet Road near the Brentwood neighborhood.
Black Pearl Books
A little further north on Burnet Road is Black Pearl Books, a Black-woman-owned independent book store dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusion, and representation through literature. The family-run business acts as a cultural hub that offers a curated collection of books, hosts author signings, and champions community voices. There’s even a book exchange section where readers can take a book and leave one to share.
Monkeywrench Books
Monkeywrench Books is a volunteer-run bookstore and community space that’s been around since 2001. If you’re interested in alternative reads, Monkeywrench offers zines and books from indie voices and focuses primarily on activism, underground literature, and social topics. Located in the iconic North Loop neighborhood, the store also hosts book fairs, film nights, art nights, writing workshops, and events.
