What is Barton Springs Pool?

Considered the “Crown Jewel of Austin,” Barton Springs Pool is a local treasure and by far the best way to cool off on a hot Texas day. Just a few miles from the Heywood Hotel, this spring-fed, natural-bottom pool measures three acres in size, with depths running from the shallow end out to about 18 feet.

Although it may look like a natural swimming hole, Barton Springs is an actual public pool, complete with lifeguards, changing stations, and restrooms. It draws close to 800,000 visitors a year, and it’s home to the endangered Barton Springs salamander, found nowhere else on earth.

How cold is Barton Springs Pool?

Barton Springs holds steady between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit all year, fed straight from the underground springs of the Edwards Aquifer. That constant temperature is the whole magic of it. The water stays cool and refreshing through the warmest months, and almost mild in winter. It’s one of the best places to swim in Austin, especially to escape the heat. The three-acre pool is surrounded by grassy areas where you can lounge with the locals and dry off before your next dip.

Is Barton Springs Pool free?

Barton Springs Pool charges admission during peak swimming season, which runs from Spring Break through October 31st. Admission prices vary for residents, non-residents, children, and adults 62 and older, and the City updates them each season. You’ll find current rates on the City of Austin’s Barton Springs page. Your Heywood Summer Swim Pass covers entry, so you can skip that part entirely.

Is Barton Springs Pool safe to swim in?

Yes. Barton Springs Pool is a natural, spring-fed pool that’s safe to swim in, and lifeguards are on site. The City of Austin regularly monitors water quality at Barton Springs and other natural bodies of water. You can always check with our concierge team about the latest pool updates before you head out.

What do I need to know before going to Barton Springs Pool?

Bring a towel, sunscreen, and plenty of water to stay hydrated. A large picnic blanket helps too, since the pool is surrounded by grassy areas without chairs.

And because the pool is all-natural, there are rock formations at the bottom you may walk across. They can be slippery, so water shoes are a smart call if you want to err on the side of caution.

Forgot to pack the essentials? We’ve got you covered. Guests staying at the Heywood have access to free beach towels, soft-sided coolers, sunscreen, and more.
