Canopy: A One-stop Spot for Art and Craft Goods in Austin
The Canopy collective space is a great destination for artist-made goods. The Canopy community occupies four acres off Springdale Road in East Austin. Visitors can browse store fronts and galleries and see artists in the studios where they work. You can check out their listing of artists and studios.
Every first Saturday of the month, the space offers open studio hours, which presents an incredible opportunity to see and purchase art and goods directly from the artists. Here are a few of our favorites who have studio hours year-round. Check out Yard Dog Gallery, an unconventional gallery that highlights work from American Folk Artists from the US, Canada, and Mexico. The gallery spent 24 years on S. Congress and now calls the Eastside home and is open Thursday through Saturday.

Also located at Canopy and available by appointment, Keith Kreeger creates perfectly minimalist ceramics, all handcrafted and sturdy enough for daily use. His work is favored by Austin’s most stylish restaurants.
For fun laser cut gifts, visit the MakeATX Studio. The women-owned laser cutting studio is home to Bright Beam Goods, a line of laser cut puzzles, games, and their signature Mistaken Lyrics coasters.
One of our favorite jewelry designers, Lisa Crowder, is also located at Canopy. Make an appointment to visit her studio, where she makes and sells her contemporary designs.

Choose from any number of shops along the street to explore. Room Service Vintage has a wide variety of retro knick-knacks, vintage clothing and accessories, and furniture. There’s also Monkey Wrench Books, which boasts a wide selection of socialist, feminist, and otherwise radical literature.

Burnet and North Lamar
If you enjoy small creative businesses with a flair for novelty, Atown is one of the best shops to grab a souvenir! Atown opened in 2011 and has become a popular shopping destination for folks looking to pick up a gift (or five). Their motto is “Keep Atown Weird,” and it’s easy to see why when browsing shelves stocked with Illuminidol celebrity prayer candles, local artisan goods, and several volumes of El Arroyo’s Big Book of Signs.
Across the street is Toy Joy, a must-visit for toys, games, and collectibles.
Head a few blocks East to visit the North Lamar area where you’ll find a collection of unique locally-owned shops.
